Bearding

Well it’s bee Hot-hot-hot in Maine yesterday and today.  The heat index reached nearly 100 degrees. The bees must have gotten the Heat Advisory though, because they were all out on the doorstep cooling off.  When I first approached the hive yesterday I thought they were swarming.There were a lot of bees on the outside, similar to what happened as they swarmed.  Here is what the hive looked like:

 I ran back in the house with my best impression of “the bees are swarming” routine from last year.  Rob came out though and informed me that they were ‘bearding’.  Basically the bees were hot and hangin’ out on the front step.  The original hive didn’t have quite as many bees on it as the middle one:
